ABSTRACT

Writing is considered the most complexlanguage skill because it requires both knowledge on morphology and syntax – appropriately putting letters together to form words, words to form sentences, phrases to form clauses or sentences, and sentences to form paragraphs. In academic writing, relevance and coherence of words put together in the text are to be observed. This study analyzed the use of discourse markers in the narrative essays of the students to enhance their academic writing. It was revealed  that the students have limited knowledge on the functions of discourse markers or collectively, sentence connectors or signaling devices and they over use particular discourse markers. That is why the study re-emphasizes the need for instructors to give ample, varied activities tackling the English discourse markers for easy understanding of their meanings and functions to enhance their narrative essays.
